THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN

is  the Memorial Cross and the "Top of the Mountain" Tea Rooms

The Memorial Cross was originally built in the 1930's....

as a remembrance to the soldiers who died during World War 1.

It is 21 m high and on a clear day, can be seen from the Calder Highway, the main highway which connects Melbourne to Bendigo.

Unfortunately the Cross was hit by lightening in 1975 and consequently corrosion saw its decline, combined with the effects of the Ash Wednesday Bush Fires in 1983.

In 1995 the Cross was replaced, using stronger materials, along with the restoration of the surrounding gardens.

A LITTLE HISTORY

Mt Macedon was first climbed/discovered by Thomas Mitchell in 1836

The first settlers to the area were timber loggers who sold the timber to the Gold digging areas and to build some of Melbourne's first homes.

In the 1870's Melbournians wealthy socialites discovered the coolness of the mountain in summer, along with the tranquility and beauty of the area  and consequently purchased land and built mansions for their summer playground.

Hence, today exists the most beautiful homes, mostly on acreage with exceptionally fine English Gardens, many of which are open to the general public to visit and enjoy.

Real Estate  Values are still extremely high and the wealthy  still use the mountain as their summer time playground, escaping the heat of Melbourne.
